The rational for the refuse (garbage) fee was decided in 2008 when the contract with Great American Disposal (GAD) increased by approximately $4,000 per month.  Prior to that time, the refuse costs collection and disposal were paid for by the operating millage of the Township.  With the increase, it was decided that the users of the service should be responsible for part of the costs and the refuse fee was created.  The Township passed an ordinance that requires all residential structures including duplexes and apartment buildings would be charged for the service.

The monthly charge is approximately half of the actual cost with the General Fund or millage paying the other half, which amounts to $150,000 per year.   The refuse fee will be sent out with your tax bill twice a year for $36.90 each.

At the July 12, 2010 board meeting it was voted to keep the monthly rate of $6.15 the same for the next 6 months even though the tipping fees went up $3.50 per ton.
