Procedures for Applying & Securing a Building Permit

  1. Fill out an application for a Zoning Permit and obtain approval from the Zoning Administrator.
  2. Fill out an application for plan examination and building permit form.  To include site or plot plan on reverse side.
  3. Provide a blue print or drawing of proposed work.  Minimum of single line detail with floor plan.
  4. Both well and sewer permits must be obtained from the Dickinson County Health Department prior to obtaining a building permit.
  5. All commercial construction, renovation, additions, and alterations must have plans and specifications.  The before mentioned plans and specifications must be under the direct supervision of an architect or engineer licensed pursuant to Act No. 299 of the Public Acts of 1980 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, and shall bear that architect's or engineer's signature and seal.  Exception:  Will not be necessary if Building Official determines it is of a minor nature.
  6. All plans and specifications for one and two family dwellings that have more than 3500 square feet of living space, will be under the direct supervision of an architect or enginner licensed pursuant to Act No. 299 of the Public Acts of 1980 of the Michigan Compled Laws, and shall bear that architect's or engineer's signature and seal.  Exception: Not needed if less than 3500 square feet.
  7. For numbers 5 & 6 above, plans and specifications must be submitted to the Building Inspector and Plan Reviewer at the Dickinson Area Construction Codes Commission, 1200 Woodward Ave, Kingsford, MI (906) 774-4885 for approval prior to issuance of a building permit.
  8. Additional permits are required for electrical, plumbing and mechanical installations.
  9. Home owners that are acting as the General Contractor for their personal residence, may secure all permits necessary for the installation and completion of their electrical, plumbing and mechanical needs, provided that all material and work meets all local and state building codes.
  10. It is unlawful to build a home or residence for resale unless you reside in such dwelling for a minimum of six months if you are not a licensed residential builder.
  11. Michigan Licensed Builders that construct homes or residences for resale or for a prospective customer, must secure Michigan Licensed residential builder.
  12. All applicants that are issued a building permit are responsible to read and fully abide by the instructions set forth responsible to read and fully abide by the instructions set forth on such permit. (required inspections)
